• Cass' Personal Finance Journal: More On My Credit Score

Dec 8, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

Back in May I learned I have a less-than-stellar credit score. Since then I disputed some inaccuracies in my credit report and completed a debt-management program, so I decided to check my score again to find out if there had been a positive impact.

  • Cass’ Personal Finance Journal: More expert advice on how to save smartly

Nov 17, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

As I’m trying to set and adhere to realistic savings goals, I spoke to Lynette Khalfani-Cox, who is founder and lead writer for personal finance site, The Money Coach.

Right away, Lynette told me, “Your goals are good, but the one I like best is the summer vacation.”

  • Cass' Personal Finance Journal: So “beach vacation” is not part of a smart saving strategy?

As you’ll recall, my grandmother unexpectedly sent me money recently. The gift inspired me to set savings goals. I hoped writing them down would give me a concrete plan I could adhere to, but instead it left me confused and overwhelmed.

I decided to turn to experts to help me prioritize and focus.

Here’s what my original list looked like:

  • Cass’ Personal Finance Journal: Something good comes in the mail!

Sep 27, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

My grandmother recently sent me a chunk of money—of the five-figure variety—in the mail! I was definitely surprised.

She explained that her financial advisor had suggested she send my sister and me our inheritance now as a way to ensure we don’t pay huge taxes on it after she’s gone. It’s sad to think about, but couldn’t have come at a better time.

The other day I turned down an opportunity to take part in a focus group. My father owns a market research firm, which is always an immediate red flag in pre-screening, so I just preempted the inevitable. But it KILLED me. I could have earned $125. Just for opinions!

The offer got me thinking about creative ways to bring in cash when the paychecks aren’t rolling in. I talked to friends and experts and searched the web. Here’s what I found:

  • Cass' Personal Finance Journal: Money Stress

Aug 19, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

It’s been three months since I started this blog. I hope you’ve enjoyed it so far.

When I wrote my first post, I was looking forward to starting to save (and to making up for all that I didn’t put away in my 20s). But then a project I was working on didn’t pan out and left me trying to quickly drum up some new income.

It’s tough to be in my 30s and thinking about making coffee at home because spending $2 at the deli isn’t in my budget. I’ve already been through this phase (a few times)!

  • Cass' Personal Finance Journal: My Credit "Tip Sheet"

Aug 13, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

In last week’s post I wrote about informally polling my friends and learning how little they know about credit.

So I set out to narrow down the essential points one needs to know about the subject. I read up on credit reports and scores on sites like myFICO.com, annualcreditreport.com and, of course, NYSE Money Sense. I also reached out to women’s personal finance expert Manisha Thakor and Gerri Detweiler, who consults for Credit.com.

    Here’s my Credit “Tip Sheet”:

  • Cass’ Personal Finance Journal: What do my friends know about their credit?

Aug 4, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

Since I started writing about my finances, my friends are increasingly bringing up their own money matters with me.

I was out with friends recently – drinking 25-cent beers and eating free hotdogs (who said a deal can’t be found in New York City?) – and was surprised when all three confided they had not checked their credit score in the last year. Two had never done so!

I started to wonder how common this is among my peers so I decided to conduct an informal email survey. I asked 70 of my friends these three questions:

  • Cass’ Personal Finance Journal – When Uncle Sam Calls, Answer!

Jul 28, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

Last Wednesday I found a letter from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance dated March 2007 that confirmed a $103 tax lien on my credit record. (Essentially this lien was placed against me, including penalties and interest, because I didn’t pay $73 in state taxes in 2002 and my property became collateral.)

Jul 14, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

Last week I wrote here about TransUnion’s response to my credit report dispute letter. While TransUnion corrected certain errors I had challenged, the agency confirmed I still had the negative impact of a “paid tax lien” on my record with a $103 payment I made to the New York County City Registrar in June 2007.

Jul 7, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

I was excited when I finally got answers to the credit report I had formally disputed in May.

TransUnion, one of the national credit agencies, sent me a 2.5-page response in which it listed under “investigation results” the five facts I questioned and then showed the new information the firm has on file.

For me, one of the hardest things about budgeting is that I can’t update my wardrobe as often as I’d like to. I have a lot of nice clothes I love, but – to be honest – I always have my eye on replenishments.

  • Cass’ Personal Finance Journal: Putting Advice Into Action

Jun 16, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

Last week I started more carefully analyzing my day-to-day spending habits and reached out to a financial psychology expert, Dr. Blad Klontz, to get his advice, too.

Since then, I’ve tried to incorporate Dr. Klontz’ tips into my daily routine.

I found his most valuable feedback was specific. He added up my repeated expenses and pointed out I spent a big chunk – almost $700-worth – on cabs and meals out.

Jun 9, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

I’ve been taking a closer look at my spending patterns, prioritizing and trying to uncover where I might be able to cut back. I used an Excel spreadsheet to track all my spending over the last three weeks including everything from meals out to cabs, bills and, yes, shoe repairs.

I then reached out to Dr. Brad Klontz, who is the co-founder of Your Mental Wealth and an expert in financial psychology, and sent him an email that summed up my background and priorities, like this:

  • Personal Finance Journal: Summer Freebies

Jun 2, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

Last weekend the Memorial Day holiday – and beautiful weather – kicked summer into full swing on the East Coast. It was bitter sweet for me. As I take a much closer look at my finances, budget and try to pare down debt, I know I have to make the most of this summer without spending.

  • Personal Finance Journal: Cass Gets Good News and, Er, Her FICO Score

May 26, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

A couple weekends ago as I was sifting through a stack of mail I came across an envelope from American Express. I could barely contain myself as I read and reread the enclosed letter that said I had a balance of zero! Five years ago I owed American Express $8,000. (Because of a confusing debt management program I had not known exactly how close I was to paying this off.)

  • Introducing Personal Finance Journal: Cass' Journey

May 19, 2010 by Cassandra Nye

I turned 31 last Tuesday and found myself thinking a lot about my finances – where I am, where I’d like to be and how to get there.

While my friends buy property, watch their 401(k)s grow and settle into their thirties using terms like “assets” and “portfolios”, I still live paycheck to paycheck. I have a monthly salary, a rent-stabilized Manhattan apartment with two roommates and $10,000 of slowly-diminishing debt. Oh, and some nice handbags and shoes.
