Cass’ Personal Finance Journal: More expert advice on how to save smartly
As I’m trying to set and adhere to realistic savings goals, I spoke to Lynette Khalfani-Cox, who is founder and lead writer for personal finance site, The Money Coach.
Right away, Lynette told me, “Your goals are good, but the one I like best is the summer vacation.”
She noted that people tend to neglect budgeting for things on which they want to spend money. “Ask yourself what you care about,” Lynette advised. “Planning for those items or experiences makes it far more likely you’ll achieve your other goals,” she said.
I like Lynette’s strategy so far!
She agreed, though, that my first priority – before saving for anything “fun” – must be to make a large payment toward my credit card debt. She also suggested I transfer my balance to a lower-interest card. She recommends checking Bankrate.com for a card that has low or no interest. She also reminded me that every card application is reflected in my credit report so I should apply selectively.
Once I’ve paid off a chunk of debt – at least $3,000 – Lynette suggests setting aside $1,000 for a rainy-day fund. “Everyone needs one,” she said. “It’s smaller than an emergency fund—about $500 to $1,500–and can cover a one-time event without ruining your entire budget.”
A one-time event isn’t a beach vacation. Or a Chanel bag.
Lynette talked to me about what she calls “fun” savings. While in general she supports planning ahead to be able to spend on travel or little indulgences, she said I should not “save” for anything if I don’t have that income to put aside. First, I need to figure out how to get out of debt and put away $100 each month for retirement.
I’m learning. Budgeting is about prioritizing and saving for things before I do them – not the other way around. Aah, maturity.
